McKenzie/Mack (she/her) is a member of Sparrow’s Customer Experience team. Let’s get to know Mack!
How did you get to where you are?
My background is in art, and while I was working as an artist after college, I was also waiting tables. After many years of serving and coping with artist woes, I decided it was time to try something new. I still very much enjoyed being in a customer-facing position, but I had a hard time finding a role that was the right blend of helping people and problem solving. When I learned more about the Leave Specialist role at Sparrow, I found that it would really allow me to connect with the people I’m helping and build trusting relationships. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to help others during a big life event.
What is a fun fact about you?
In college, I received my certification to become a Zumba instructor.
Why did you join Sparrow?
Sparrow made a really great first impression on me. The interview process was well-structured and everyone I met was so kind and thoughtful. I could feel the genuine support from everyone I interviewed with as well as their enthusiasm for Sparrow’s mission. It was clear that Sparrow’s team was a group of dedicated people working to build something that hadn’t been built before and I found that to be very exciting.
What is your favorite part of working at Sparrow?
The team. I get to work with some of the brightest and most hardworking people - it continues to amaze me. I always say that we work hard for each other because we care that much.
What do you know now about working at Sparrow that you wish you knew on your first day?
The whole team has your back. There isn’t much of a roadmap for what we’re doing and it can feel like a lot of pressure to ensure the clients we’re supporting are happy. But we always collaborate as a team to help problem-solve or troubleshoot, so you’re never alone.
What are you doing this weekend?
Finally painting my office! My co-workers will be so pleased to no longer be staring at paint swatches behind my head in Zoom meetings.
What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?
It’s not the farthest geographically, but I traveled to Cuba in 2010 and it was just so different from any place I’d ever been. It felt very uniquely far from home.
