Amber (she/her) is a member of Sparrow’s Hiring team. Let’s get to know Amber!
How did you get to where you are?
My journey to Sparrow has not been typical. I struggled to find a career that aligned with my strengths and passion. When I graduated high school, I thought my empathy and strong constitution would make me a great nurse. However, after a year as a nursing assistant at a long-term care facility, I realized that I did not want to spend so much of my career saying goodbye to patients.
After that discovery, I felt lost. I transferred from my local community college to the state college (Shout out to CSU! [Colorado State University]) and completed the basic requirements as I searched for my calling.
While in college, I worked for a cleaning company, working my way up from entry level to managing several different crews. One of my favorite parts of this job was getting to know our customers. I loved hearing their life stories, seeing tokens from their travels, and celebrating their life wins right along with them. I was always curious what they did for a career and how they got to the place they were in now. One of my clients was an HR director for a local business with a nationwide reach. I spoke candidly with her about my career uncertainty, and she suggested I look into HR.
I met with my course counselor shortly after and changed my path once again. I was excited to bring the “‘human’ back into human resources.” Next, I landed an internship with the City of Fort Collins HR and Volunteer Services department. I would regularly set up a booth at the local Senior Center, providing information and encouraging the community to volunteer with the City. As a specialist in volunteer services, I matched interested volunteers with open volunteer opportunities at the City. I absolutely loved matching people with their passions and strengths!
Covid hit the U.S. the year that I graduated from college; it was a scary, awful time. There was so much economic uncertainty and the future was unknown. I joined a Private Equity firm in a hybrid role as a People Ops and Talent Coordinator. During this time I was mentored and given the opportunity to lean further into the Talent side of the role, further igniting my passion for Recruiting. In summer of 2022, I joined the Sparrow Talent team as a Recruiting Coordinator. I have been blown away by the strong commitment to culture and the methodology that we use in our hiring process. I feel so grateful and excited to log into work every day.
Goooooo Sparrow!
What is a fun fact about you?
I have three dogs, Aqua (female, Doberman) Cinder (male, Heeler mix) Alder (male, Great Dane). I also foster on occasion with a local dog rescue!
Why did you join Sparrow?
I joined Sparrow for a few reasons: Mission, Energy, and the People!
- The mission that Sparrow carries and the impact we have on our clients is profound. Our wonderful CEO saw a genuine opportunity to positively impact the lives of employees all over the U.S.
- I LOVE the start-up energy that Sparrow has. We are in a ground breaking space with the power to impact and shape internal processes while building this company one team member at a time.
- I can not say enough wonderful things about the people that work at Sparrow. Every team member is compassionate, empathetic, mission driven, and eager to meet the daily challenges with excellence.
What is your favorite part of working at Sparrow?
One of my favorite things about Sparrow is the strong culture of feedback and collaboration. There is a truly authentic open door policy between managers and team members. Paring down to a more myopic lens, the collaboration within the Talent team is unmatched. We work hard to help all team members succeed and take the time to move forward with our processes in a thoughtful, strategic manner.
Have you picked up any new hobbies?
I paint and work with clay. I am by no means a talented artist, but I love the chance for expression and to create new things.
What’s the last show you binge-watched?
Dark – what a mind bending show! Originally shot in German, so many viewers will need subtitles, but it is so well done and worth reading as you go!
What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?
Puerto Rico - absolutely one of my favorite locations on the planet! Old San Juan was beautiful, I loved the colors and architecture. For those of you that know me, I also loved the iguanas all over the island too!
